Chapter Zero — Before the First Word

Every Published Book
Was Once a Scattered Dream

We've watched 73 manuscripts cross from rough drafts to bound spines since 2019. This is the story of how a book actually gets made — and where you step in.

"I came with a folder of notes. I left with an ISBN." — Declan F., Galway, published 2024

Chapter One — The Rising Action

The Timeline of a Book's Life

Week 1–2

Manuscript Assessment

We read your work — all of it. Not a skim, not a sample chapter review. A full structural and editorial assessment that maps the bones of your book and identifies where it sings and where it stumbles.

"They found a plot hole in chapter nine I'd been blind to for two years." — Aoife M.

Week 3–6

Developmental Editing

This is where the heavy lifting happens. Structure, pacing, character arcs (for fiction), argument flow (for non-fiction) — we work alongside you, not over you. Every suggestion comes with reasoning. Every cut is discussed.

Week 7–9

Copy Editing & Proofing

Grammar, punctuation, consistency of style — the fine grain. We use a two-pass system: one editor for corrections, a second pair of eyes for verification. Nothing leaves with a dangling modifier.

Our Two-Pass Promise

✦ Pass One: Line-by-line editorial correction

✦ Pass Two: Independent verification read

✦ Final: Author approval before typesetting

Week 10–12

Design & Typesetting

Cover design, interior layout, font selection, margin calibration, chapter header styling. We produce three cover concepts and refine your chosen direction through two revision rounds. Interior typesetting follows industry standards for your genre.

Week 13–14

Print Preparation & Distribution Setup

ISBN registration, metadata preparation, print file generation, distribution channel configuration. We handle the technical handoff so your book enters the world correctly formatted and discoverable.

"The ISBN process alone would have taken me months to figure out. They had it sorted in a day." — Ronan K., Cork

Chapter Two — The Climax

The Moment Your Book Becomes Real

There's a specific afternoon — usually a Tuesday or Thursday — when the print proof arrives. The weight of it in your hands. The smell of fresh paper. The cover you chose catching light for the first time. That moment is what every week of editing, every round of revision, every late-night discussion about chapter structure was building toward.

Fiction Author

"I held the proof copy and cried. Not because it was perfect — because it was mine. Truly, properly mine. Optimum Book Vault understood my story better than I did at points."

— Niamh T., Dublin, literary fiction, published March 2024

Non-Fiction Author

"My business book went from a 200-page brain dump to a focused, readable guide. The structural editing alone was worth every cent. Distribution setup saved me weeks of confusion."

— Ciarán B., Limerick, business non-fiction, published November 2023

Chapter Three — The Resolution

What Happens After Publication

Publishing isn't the end of the story — it's the beginning of a different one. We stay with our authors for 60 days after publication, handling distribution queries, metadata adjustments, and any print issues that surface.

We don't disappear after the invoice is paid. If a retailer lists your book with the wrong subtitle, we fix it. If your ebook formatting looks odd on a specific device, we adjust it. The post-publication window is part of the service, not an upsell.

Post-Publication Support Includes

↳ Metadata correction across distribution channels

↳ Print quality verification on first batch

↳ Ebook rendering check on major platforms

↳ Author copies coordination

Author reviewing their published book with satisfaction

"Six weeks after publication, they caught a metadata error on a retailer I'd never even heard of. Fixed it within 24 hours. That's the kind of care you can't buy elsewhere." — Brigid L., Waterford

Principles We Work By

Your name goes on the cover. Your voice stays in the text. We edit; we never rewrite.

No hidden fees. The quote we give at assessment is the price you pay, unless you request additional services.

We say no to manuscripts we can't serve well. If your book needs something outside our expertise, we'll tell you honestly.

Every author gets a single point of contact — one editor who knows your book inside and out.

Epilogue — Voices from the Shelf

Three Stories, Three Genres, One Process

Poetry Collection

"Tidal Margins"

Published: June 2023

"I wasn't sure a poetry collection could go through the same process as a novel. It can — but differently. They adjusted their approach entirely. The typesetting alone made my poems breathe on the page in a way my Word documents never could. The cover is a painting by a local artist they connected me with."

— Siobhán R., Kerry

Children's Picture Book

"The Fox Who Counted Stars"

Published: December 2024

"Illustration coordination was the part I dreaded. They managed the entire process between me and the illustrator — briefs, revisions, colour proofing. The final book looks like it came from a major publisher. My daughter thinks I'm famous now."

— Pádraig D., Sligo

Memoir

"Granite and Glass"

Published: February 2025

"Writing a memoir is exposing. Having strangers edit your life story is terrifying. But they handled it with such care — flagging factual inconsistencies gently, suggesting structural changes that made the emotional arc land harder. I trusted them completely by week three."

— Maeve C., Donegal
